Four candidates have registered for the Russell Township’s councillor by-election. They are Jean-Yves Otis, Charles Armstrong, Julian Hunt and Jevon Rudder.

The Town of Casselman is considering connecting its water system with that of Clarence-Rockland, which gets water from the Ottawa River. Mayor Geneviève Lajoie expects the project will cost more than $100 million.


The Ottawa-Carleton Plowing Match is returning to Sarsfield for the first time in 13 years. It is this Friday and Saturday, August 23 and 24, at Chretien Family Farms on Dunning Road. Competitors must qualify at local matches to be eligible for the International Plowing Match (IPM) and Rural Expo, which will be held in Lindsay, Ontario this year.

 

Denis Goulet, the Vice Chair of Miller Waste Systems of Markham, recently sent a message to its Community Liaison Committee saying the Capital Region Resource Recovery Centre (CRRRC) has been approved by the Province of Ontario to accept residential waste. The proposed CRRRC landfill had previously been authorized to accept industrial, commercial, and institutional waste only. Goulet’s message said there is no plan to change the facility’s design, operation, monitoring or environmental controls. The proposed site is at Frontier Road and Boundary Road south of Highway 417 east of Ottawa.


The United Counties of Prescott and Russell are inviting residents to submit nominations for the 10th 2024 Prescott and Russell JP St. Pierre Award. The nomination deadline is 4:00 p.m., Friday, October 25. The award is given to deserving residents who stand out for exceptional contributions to the community. It was created in memory of former mayor Jean-Paul St. Pierre, who passed away while in office in 2014. To submit a nomination consult the UCPR’s website.


Lyle Beckstead of Brinston won the Kin Club of Russell’s Catch the Ace 6 Lottery jackpot on Sunday, August 18th. Envelope # 13 revealed the Ace of Spades. Beckstead won a grand total of almost $891,000.
