CJRO News: December 2 to December 8, 2024
Hello bonjour and welcome to CJRO News on CJRO Radio. I'm Candice Vetter reporting from Russell.
The Ottawa Citizen has reported that unexploded bombs are in Mer Bleue Bog, possibly in large numbers. The bog was used as an RCAF military training range during the Second World War. The newspaper filed a Freedom of Information request and received declassified documents. A DND report from 1973 said, “A large number of high explosive bombs were dropped on this range which failed to function. The number and location of these unexploded ordnance could not be determined.” Another report said, “Because they could not be located and destroyed they have remained where they fell ever since.” The Citizen article also said “military experts believe the 500-pound and 1,000-pound bombs pose a low risk as long as they remain undisturbed by the public.” The records said a military bomb disposal team was tasked with clearing the former range but the boggy terrain made it too difficult. Military experts were reported as saying “The recreational pathways and boardwalks used by the public are not within the areas where the UXO might be found.”
The Canada Revenue Agency has put out a statement saying, “If you got an email or text asking you to deposit or claim the Working Canadians Rebate, it’s a scam! The Working Canadians Rebate will be automatically delivered by direct deposit or by cheque to eligible individuals after enactment of the legislation.” CRA does not email or text links to online forms, ask for personal or financial information by email or send emails or texts with links to get payments.
