The Tewin project team, made up of the Taggart Group who are Ottawa developers, and the Algonquins of Ontario, a group formed by the provincial government and the Pikwakanagan First Nation which is 500 kilometres west of Ottawa, held an open house on Thursday, January 9 at the Carlsbad Springs Community Centre. It was attended by about 150 people, mostly local residents who will be directly affected. Storyboards at the open house showed a mix of high-density townhouses, apartments and commercial and retail spaces. The land was acquired by both groups just prior to and early in the pandemic and the development approved by Ottawa City Council under then-mayor Jim Watson in 2021. The project covers about 1,600 hectares of farmland and forest in an unserviced area of rural southeast Ottawa between Carlsbad Springs and Edwards. In November the City of Ottawa announced that over 500 hectares of the lands will be designated a provincially significant wetland and be managed as a natural heritage trust. The protected area is to the east of the 15,000-home main suburban development, and includes the headwaters of the Bearbrook. Residents’ concerns include the effect on additional wetlands and forests nearby, loss of farmland, traffic congestion, loss of rural lifestyle, and the anticipated increase to City of Ottawa residents due to infrastructure needs.

Carlsbad Springs Winter Carnival is fast approaching. Friday, January 24 starts with a ham dinner and live music from Highway Child and Last Minute Decision. Saturday, January 25 meals include chili, hotdogs and breakfast sandwiches, and a curling bonspiel, which must be registered for. On Sunday, have breakfast and play Bingo in pajamas. Events are at the Carlsbad Springs Community Centre.

Other winter carnivals in the area are Embrun starting January 16 and going until January 26, Morewood from January 31 to February 2, Sarsfield on February 1, Marionville February 7 to 9, and Crysler February 12 to 16.

On January 3 the L’Orignal Courthouse was lit up in celebration of its 200th anniversary. The courthouse is still in operation as a courthouse and the jail operated until 1998, and is now a museum. The buildings opened in 1825 and are the oldest buildings in the United Counties of Prescott and Russell, as well as the oldest jail and courthouse in Ontario, says Louise Bedard, President of L’Orignal Old Jail.
