CJRO News: June 10 to June 16, 2024

Hello bonjour and welcome to CJRO News on CJRO Radio. I'm Candice Vetter reporting from Embrun.

Proponents of the Tewin subdivision project are hosting an in-person open house the evening of Wednesday, June 19 at the Carlsbad Springs Community Centre. Residents of the Carlsbad Springs, Edwards, Ramsayville, Vars, Russell and other nearby communities which will be affected can attend. The Tewin media release said the process is in the environmental assessment stage, and that transportation and infrastructure will be identified. The Tewin.ca website says it has “the potential to accommodate between 35,000 and 45,000 residents.” The land is currently unserviced, and is a combination of forest, wetland and farmland. Last year the destruction of 75 hectares of forest near Piperville Road by the developers set off numerous complaints to the City of Ottawa, which decided not to pursue charges.

Russell Township Council will hold a special meeting on June 17 at 5 p.m. for the presentation of bids and plans for the township’s new proposed recreation centre. This is following a meeting for the public set up by the owner of the Embrun Panthers hockey team last week. A petition which has hundreds of signatures asks the township to put the project on hold so amendments can be made. The petition says, “We have one chance to do it right!” The design can be seen at Russell.ca under Recreation and Culture.

Some of the residents asking Russell Township to delay the bid process for the Recreation Centre wait outside the Township Hall for the regular Council meeting to start, on the evening of Monday, June 10. CJRO will report on the meeting results next week. Photo Candice Vetter

Now for some music news.

The Festival of Small Halls lineup has been released and one of the halls is the Russell Arena. Sarah Harmer will play at the Russell Arena on October 7 at 7 p.m. Harmer is an award-winning, platinum-selling singer-songwriter and environmental activist. She has released six critically acclaimed albums. Her latest is Are You Gone.

In Metcalfe the Thursday night Music in the Park series of concerts has started up again. The free outdoor concerts run every Thursday in the centre of the village. They are cancelled in bad weather.

The popular Canadian band Big Sugar is the top billing at the Navan Fair on Saturday, August 10. The Navan Fair itself is August 8 to 11 and new this year the crops exhibits will include maple syrup, honey, sunflower seeds and barley.

The following weekend is the Russell Fair, where the Friday night headliner will be the James Barker Band. The Russell Fair runs from August 15 to 18.
