The Russell Legion was able to host a Remembrance Day Ceremony on November 11 and a veterans’ dinner on November 9, by being given special permission by the Township of Russell. The occupancy permit for the Legion Hall has still not been granted, although that is expected any day. In last week’s news we said the hall was damaged by fire five years ago but it was three years ago. Over 400 people gathered for the Remembrance Ceremony on Monday, November 11.
Over 560 hectares east of the proposed Tewin project have been designated as provincially significant wetland. The Algonquins of Ontario and the Taggart Group own the marsh and swamp area as well as the farmland beside it. They plan to develop the farmland and lesser wetlands nearby into a suburb of 15,000 homes, plus businesses and services. The site has been a subject of controversy since it was proposed in 2020. City of Ottawa staff recommended against the project, as no city services currently extend to that rural area, making it an expensive undertaking. City Council approved it in early 2021. A study recently posted to the City’s website suggests the wetland, which is also the headwaters of the Bear Brook, is important enough to be given provincial protection. That means the protected portion cannot be developed without a permitting process with the South Nation Conservation Authority. The City still has to rezone the site.
It may not look like it but Christmas is five weeks away and Santa Claus will be very busy visiting beforehand. He will be at the Embrun Santa Parade of Lights on Saturday, November 23, at 6:30, at the Russell Santa Parade on Sunday, November 24 Russell at 1 p.m., and at the Casselman nighttime Christmas Parade on Sunday, December 1 starting at 5:30 p.m. That is the final event of the four-day Casselman Christmas Festival which starts November 28. In addition Santa Claus will be personally visiting children in Carlsbad Springs on Sunday, December 8, but first a parent must register the child’s name, age, gender, address, and phone number by emailing cluboptimistecarlsbad@gmail.com.
