CJRO News: September 9 to September 15, 2024

Hello bonjour and welcome to CJRO News on CJRO Radio. I'm Candice Vetter reporting from Embrun.

The Township of Russell recently announced the Embrun Branch of the Public Library will be relocating to a new two-story being built by the Embrun Co-op. The move to the new 5,000-square foot library is scheduled for Fall of 2026. It will be in a central location on Notre Dame Street. The Embrun Branch has been located at Pavillon La Croisée, within the French Catholic elementary school since it was moved from the Township Hall. Over ten years ago the Township had to make room for a Service Ontario outlet, or risk losing the vehicle registry office completely. The school location was initially intended to be temporary, and there are challenges there, including liability concerns. Space in the as-yet-unbuilt recreation centre was considered but dropped due to cost, and the Camille Piche Community Centre was also considered.

The Hawkesbury Detachment of the OPP is investigating a shooting incident near Vankleek Hill on Thursday, September 5.  At a residence on Highway 34 near Main Street West it was reported that multiple shots had been fired at parked vehicles. The individual or individuals then fled westbound on County Road 10 in a black or dark vehicle. There were no injuries and investigators believe this was a targeted incident, with no imminent risk to public safety. Anyone with information should contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or call Crime Stoppers.

There will be lots to celebrate about Russell’s heritage this Saturday, September 14. At noon the Township will reveal the winners of its Photo Expo in the pavilion at the Russell Fairgrounds. The contest attracted over 200 entries, more than double last year. That leads into the artists’ studio tour Autumn in the Country, which includes a location at the fairgrounds and features new and established artists. Also from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Heritage Day activities will be ongoing. This year’s theme is sports, and features talks by local Olympians Darrell Menard, who has also been a Paralympic sports medicine physician with Team Canada, and rower Greg Rokosh. Curling and broomball presentations, wagon rides, live music, and museum displays showing Russell’s sports’ history are part of the program. This is followed by the Harvest celebration, in the same location.

Garbage collection in Ottawa is being reduced. Starting September 30 households will have a three-item curbside limit picked up every two weeks. This includes garbage bags, 140-litre containers like garbage cans, or a big bulky item. This replaces the current six-item limit and will be phased in over three months. Special yellow bags can be purchased from the City for extra garbage. The City states this should reduce garbage going to the Trail Road Landfill, extending its life until 2049.
